Mono is a project led by Novell (formerly by Ximian) to create an ECMA standard compliant .NET compatible set of tools, including among others a C# compiler and a Common Language Runtime. Mono helps developers migrate existing .NET applications to Linux and develop new Linux and cross-platform applications using already the same skillset. It enables Linux users to run Microsoft ASP.NET and Web-services applications without having to make significant changes to their existing software. The framework can be run on Linux, BSD, UNIX, Mac OS X, Solaris and Windows operating systems.

Mono is included in several Linux distributions including openSuse and Ubuntu. Notable projects that use Mono include Second Life, Mindtouch Deki Wiki, imeem, VistaDB, and Unity game engine. (read more)
